Having had a day now to think about the Budget for 2008, there was nothing radical about it.
The change in stamp duty rates on house purchases, while making things simpler (not fairer, 7% tax on your home is not fair) will hopefully put some stimulus back into the housing market.
I am not sure how this government views running the country. If it was running a business it would be out of business. It appears to me to be spending and giving away money, while those who do work and earn money are asked to pay to support all this spending.
Am I missing how this is all joined up. Spending billions and borrowing billions, I could not run a business like this, I would be sacked, yet people keep voting these politicians back in.
Maybe it is just that the best sales people are in the government and are able to keep convincing us that we are buying the right thing each time. After every sale we know we were taken in, but they promise us they will perform and we let then back into government again and then they say we can't do what we said, what we meant was something different, you took us up wrong.
Check the logic of this. They increase stamp duty on cheques to encourage people to pay electronically, yet many people in Ireland can't get or can't afford broadband to go online. There are those in business that use cheques to control payments made. Cheques require a signature. Do you know how to make EFT payments? Are you computer literate enough to manage your money this way? If the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the country has problems with managing his money, how can he expect others to manage theirs?
