O2 and 4 cent texts with an 18 month catch

I got a phone call from O2 Ireland (mobile phone company) telling me that they would like to help reduce the cost of my phone bill. I said great. Unfortunately they had no better deal to offer me. I have optimised my phone plan so that with the 10 free landline and free business to business calls, on my company mobile phones only, they could not reduce my bill.

I mentioned that I have no free texts and that I pay 8 cent a text. Well now she had a deal, she could offer me 4 cent texts, but I would have to sign up for an 18 month contract. I said no thanks. I want a lower bill but I am not paying a company who offers so many different deals that that even their sales people can't identify a better deal for me and spin the call data e.g. you make 700 minutes of calls a month, but forget to mention that 300 minutes I got free!

They have only this month introduced an affordable data plan. I don't want to be stuck on an 18 month contract with a company who wont innovate. I wonder that the fact that my current contract ends in 2 months have anything to do with the original call. No one ever returned my calls when I was looking for an affordable data plan last year. Who's interest was this call made for, mine or theirs?
